I call it the perfect prayer – there is a dimension of prayer that goes beyond our human intellect – where your spirit communes directly with God. Praying in tongues is not strange; it is sacred. It bypasses our limitation and brings alignment, strength, and deep intimacy. It is a gift meant to build you, not burden you—so step into it without fear.

1. You Speak Mysteries Directly to God

When you pray in tongues, you are not limited by human understanding—you are communicating divine secrets.

“For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God… in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.” — 1 Corinthians 14:2

The word “mysteries” comes from the Greek mystērion—hidden things, divine secrets not accessible to the natural mind. Your spirit is praying the perfect will of God, even when your mind doesn’t fully grasp it.

2. You Build and Strengthen Your Inner Man

Praying in tongues strengthens you from the inside out—it edifies your spirit and fortifies your from within.

“He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself…” — 1 Corinthians 14:4

“Edifieth” is oikodoméō—to build like constructing a house, layer by layer. Every moment in tongues is spiritual strengthening, reinforcing your faith, stability, and endurance.

3. The Spirit Helps You Pray Perfectly

There are moments when words fail—but the Spirit never does.

“The Spirit himself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.” — Romans 8:26

“Intercession” is hyperentygchanō—to intervene on behalf of another with deep intensity. Praying in tongues allows the Holy Spirit to pray through you, aligning your prayers with heaven’s exact intention.

4. You Activate Rest, Peace, and Refreshing

Tongues is not just power—it is rest for your soul.

“This is the rest… and this is the refreshing…” — Isaiah 28:12

The Hebrew word for rest is menuḥāh (מְנוּחָה)—a settled place, quiet confidence, security. When you pray in the Spirit, anxiety loosens, peace flows, and your inner world comes into divine order.

Practical Activation: One Hour in the Spirit

Set aside intentional time—start with one hour.

If your mind wanders, gently return to worship or the scripture

This is not performance, it is communion with your Abba Father.

Exhortation

Praying in tongues is not something to fear or overanalyse—it is a gift to receive and steward. The more you yield, the deeper you go. The more you pray, the stronger you become.

Common now – Give God one hour and watch what He builds within you.  Perhaps you might become Wonder woman or maybe superman? Just kidding.

Dr Bill Hamon from Christian International Ministry in Florida made us read a book he wrote called 70 reasons to pray in tongues and he is 90 years of age now. The last I heard he is writing another book called 70 more reasons to pray in tongues. Powerful right?

I know one thing as you speak in tongues everyday, you will be daily empowered anew and strengthened for service in the marketplace or in ministry.
